Anyone can apply to volunteer with us - we’d love to hear from you!

We welcome individuals who have a passion for history, heritage, customer service, animal welfare or conservation.

Do I need any qualifications?

No formal qualifications are required.

However, we are looking for enthusiastic, reliable and responsible adults with a good sense of humour, and who are happy to interact with visitors.

Volunteer roles available:

Heritage volunteers

About the role:

  • bring history to life by engaging visitors with the stories of Sewerby Hall when it was still a family home
  • participate in costumed interpretation days
  • provide information about exhibits and support the Education Team in delivering activities for children and families, including educational workshops for school visits.

Skills needed:

  • good communication
  • an interest in history and heritage
  • a friendly, engaging attitude.

Horticultural volunteers

About the role:

  • help maintain and enhance our stunning gardens
  • tasks may include planting, weeding, pruning, and interacting with visitors
  • bring history to life by engaging visitors with stories of the estate.

Skills Needed:

  • basic gardening knowledge
  • enthusiasm for outdoor work
  • a passion for horticulture.

Zoo volunteers

About the role:

  • assist with animal care, habitat maintenance, and visitor engagement in our zoo
  • bring history to life by engaging visitors with stories of the zoo.

Skills Needed:

  • a keen interest in animal welfare
  • a proactive attitude
  • the ability to interact with visitors in an engaging manner.

Customer service volunteers

About the role:

  • provide friendly assistance to visitors
  • answer questions, direct visitors around the estate, and be part of our varied events and activity programme
  • support the team in delivering an outstanding visitor experience.

Skills Needed:

  • strong communication and customer service skills
  • enthusiasm for helping others
  • a positive attitude.

Catering and Hospitality volunteers

About the role:

  • assist in our café and gift shop
  • help customers
  • clear tables
  • restock shelves
  • ensure a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.

Skills Needed:

  • a friendly and helpful approach
  • the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • good hygiene practices
  • attention to detail.
