Sewerby Hall is proud to be the repository for this internationally renowned and unique collection of Amy Johnson’s memorabilia – souvenirs from her record-breaking flights across the globe.

Born 1st July 1903 in Hull, Amy was the first woman to fly solo to Australia in her Gipsy Moth aircraft ‘Jason’. Various other record-breaking flights followed, including to Japan and South Africa.

She was married for some years to James Mollison, another record-breaking aviator.

Amy was the local celebrity who opened Sewerby Hall to the public in 1936 to huge media interest. She served as a pilot in the Air Transport Auxiliary during WWII and died tragically on 5th January 1941 when her Airspeed Oxford transport crash landed in the Thames Estuary. Our collection was donated to Sewerby Hall by her parents in 1957 and has been added to regularly ever since.
