Museum objects can be treasured items because of their historical significance, background stories and financial value but some things in our collection are quite literally….treasure.

In this exhibition we highlight objects that are defined as treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 and explore this fascinating area of archaeology.

These fascinating objects were unearthed at sites all across the East Riding.

Found by local metal detectorists and collected through the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the Museum Service, each item offers a little glimpse into the lives of the people who lived here long ago.

Most of the discoveries are metal artefacts — small treasures that lay hidden underground for centuries until now.
