The hugely popular Sewerby Winter Woodland is back Friday 8 to Friday 22 December 2023!

A brand new festive story for 2023, featuring an all-new spectacular display of lights, sounds and special effects will bring the grounds of Sewerby to life for a wondrous evening out for the whole family.

This year's Sewerby Winter Woodland will include a new route and a new theme - a chance to embark on a Magical Christmas Rescue, along with a host of cheerful festive characters! You can walk around the free-flowing experience before arriving at the courtyard where the food and drink are located.

Can you rescue Christmas?

The mischievous elves accidentally dropped a sack of presents while flying over Sewerby Hall and Gardens and we urgently need your assistance to locate and recover them. But fear not help is at hand!

The Fairy atop the Christmas tree has bestowed her wondrous magic upon the woods, illuminating them with a captivating display of colours, glitters, and twinkles.

Step into the Winter Woodland, where cheerful festive characters await to lend a hand. Together, with a touch of Fairy Magic, let's save Christmas in a truly unforgettable experience for all the family!

Be a part of the story to rescue Christmas as brand new characters will be waiting for you along our brand new route around the grounds of Sewerby Hall. Take a magical journey into a Christmas woodland, featuring special effects, light shows and some brand-new displays for 2023. Take a stroll down our Candy Cane Lane and be in awe of our Giant Christmas Bauble.

Where toys come to life

Our exhibition to add to the magic of Christmas is The Nutcracker, set on Christmas Eve many years ago, where toys come to life and take the children on an unforgettable adventure. It also explores the Nutcracker's place in popular culture since the story's publication in 1816.

To complement the exhibition, there will also be the Nutcracker trail and festive activities around the house.

Festive treats

Sweet and delicious

A range of food and drink will be available for you to enjoy, from the Clock Tower Cafe. Enjoy Pizza from the Stables Pizza Company, Love Hog Roast will be serving their delicious sandwiches and Peaky Grinders will be serving up delicious sweet treats. A fully licenced bar from Louisanna Bars will also be available from the courtyard marquee. Refreshments will be available to purchase along the Winter Woodland route as well as enjoying toasted marshmallows at an additional charge.

Fabulous glittery festive face painting, festival glitter, glitter tattoos, beautiful hand-crafted face gems and reusable hand made rainbow braids. With our fantastic artists at Fun Packed Parties! Card payments are accepted, but be prepared with cash to avoid disappointment.

New for 2023

A brand new addition for 2023, there will also be a chance for visitors to browse craft stalls from local vendors, which will have wonderful trinkets available for purchase as great stocking fillers or a treat for yourself for the Festive Season.

Choose your arrival time

There will be six sessions each evening from 8-22 December. Arrival times will be 4.30pm - 5pm, 5pm - 5.30pm, 5.30pm - 6pm, 6pm - 6.30pm, 6.30pm - 6.50pm, and 6.50pm - 7.15pm.

Relaxed performances

Our relaxed performances will be held on Sunday, 10 December at 4.30pm and 5pm, with the full experience recommencing at 5.30pm. Relaxed performances will feature reduced volume, and no haze or smoke machines, and the characters in the woodland will be aware of sensory issues.

This is a PDF which you can view and download before your visit, or bring with you on a device or printed out. This guide has been written with Autistic children and young people, and people with additional needs in mind.

It covers all areas of the event, and where stimulus may be present, such as sudden or loud sounds, when it may be busy and where to go for quiet. Are dogs allowed?

No dogs except assistance dogs.

Are mobility scooters, prams or pushchairs permitted in the house?

No; due to conservation issues motorised wheelchairs, buggies or scooters are not permitted in the house. We have a selection of non-motorised wheelchairs available for visitors who need to transfer from a motorised wheelchair in order to access the house.

In order to preserve our historical items, pushchairs and prams are not permitted in the house or Orangery. Spaces for these items can be found at the rear door of the house and there are locks available; please ring the bell at the back door and a staff member will attend. We have HippyChick Hipseats available for visitors.

Arrivals, parking and departure

On arrival, please have your tickets ready to show at the Gate.

When leaving, we ask you turn right exiting the car park to avoid the village and respect our neighbours.

Buying and collecting tickets

Tickets must be bought online in advance, they will not be available on the door. This event is not included on the Sewerby Hall Annual Pass, Great Houses or Historic Houses Association (HHA) passes.

There is no booking required for children under 3 years old.

If you have opted for printed tickets (care of box office) you must collect these from Bridlington Spa before Tuesday 5th December. After this date they will be available to collect from Sewerby Hall and Gardens.

If you have opted received eTickets, you can find it in your email inbox sent from Bridlington Spa Box Office. You will need to show the ticket on your phone or printed out on arrival. The ticket confirmation email will not permit admission, please have your e-tickets to gain entry.

Do you offer carers' tickets?

Sewerby Hall is delighted to offer free tickets to carers visiting with their cared-for person through the Brid Spa Authorised Carer Ticket Scheme.

Booking your ticket

Free carers' tickets, once registered on the scheme, can be booked in person at the Sewerby Hall Welcome Centre or over the phone on (01262) 673769

How to register

We recommend getting registered to the scheme as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. To register for the scheme, the cared-for person will need to provide a copy of the first page of your Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment letter or Access Card (+1) to Bridlington Spa. Please note: Carers tickets must be booked at the same time as the full-paying cared-for persons' ticket. Limit of one free ticket per full-paying ticket. If the cared-for person is unable or chooses not to attend, the carer's ticket is null and void.

Do you take credit cards at the event?

Cash and card payments are available, however, please be prepared with cash just in case.

Please note: it is cash only for refreshments purchased in the gardens along the winter woodland walk.

Is the walk accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters?

The walk is a mixture of tarmac paths, bark mulch paths and track matting. The walk has some small gradients but nothing substantial. There are a few steps in the pleasure gardens with an alternative route for wheelchairs.

Returns policy

We do not offer refunds on tickets for Sewerby Winter Woodland. Please do not comment on social media posts for the Winter Woodland trying to sell tickets. We will delete these posts as, in the past, customers have purchased fake tickets after responding to these posts.

Transfer of tickets to an alternative date or time are available subject to ticket availability for the cost of a booking fee per booking. You will need to make sure that the date and time you want to transfer your booking to is available before trying to transfer. For ticket transfers, please contact Sewerby Hall and Gardens on (01262) 673769.

What happens if there is extreme weather conditions at the event?

Notifications will be given to the affected customers if we have to cancel an event due to the weather. If this does happen, alternative dates will be offered subject to availability, or a refund depending on the situation.

Weather conditions are totally out of our control, and we will aim to notify our customers as soon as possible should the event be cancelled. If in doubt, please contact us directly at Sewerby Hall and Gardens on (01262) 673769 to check the event status before setting off.

What is closed during the event?

The walled gardens, zoo and play area will be closed during the event.

What should we wear to the event?

The event is in predominately outside, so we recommend to wrap up warm, check the weather forecast before your visit.

What time does the house close?

The house closes at 9.30pm during the event with last admission at 9pm.

How do I access the house?

Access to the house will be via the Orangery fire doors at the end of the winter woodland walk. This is an accessible entrance for those in wheelchairs and with mobility issues.

Visitors with mobility scooters, prams and pushchairs will need to access the house via the back door of the house where mobility scooters, prams and pushchairs can be left. To access the back of the house, visitors will be asked to turn left at the end of the light show on the house and walk towards the bandstand, then head towards the courtyard area. Directional signage/a member of staff will be available to guide you.

There will not be any direct access to the front of the house during the 2023 event.

Is it a self-led walk?

Yes, the winter woodland walk is a self-led walk that you can enjoy at your own leisure. You can choose if you wish to engage with the festive characters. The characters will perform for approximately 7 minutes every 10 minutes throughout the evening. The last performances will be:

  • Woodland Elf: 7.20pm
  • Nutcracker: 7.30pm
  • Squirrel: 7.40pm
  • Fairy: 7.50pm

Do I need to wait to see the light show?

The light show will commence at regular intervals from 5.10pm. You may be asked to wait in Snow Drop Wood for a short time to ensure you see the whole light show. Seating is available in the area as well as the option to purchase refreshments.

How long should the Winter Woodland experience take?

That is entirely up to you. We would recommend allowing 2-3 hours for the full experience of the woodland walk, festive house, food and drink.
